Canadian Chrome Company (CCC) has formed a First Nations advisory committee. Three members from local First Nations have joined the new steering committee. It aims to increase Indigenous participation related to CCC’s Ring of Fire assets.
Theresa Okimaw-Hall, Lawrence Baxter, and Vida Baxter are the initial members. Ms. Okimaw-Hall is a former Chief of Attawapiskat First Nation. Mr. Baxter is a former Chief of Marten Falls First Nation, and Ms. Baxter is a member of the same nation. CCC CEO Frank Smeenk stated the company seeks Indigenous perspectives before any sale of assets or the company itself.
The Ring of Fire is a mineral belt in Northern Ontario, holding deposits of chromite, nickel, copper, and platinum. This committee follows CCC’s earlier announcement to explore strategic alternatives, including a potential sale of the company or its assets. CCC currently holds a 90% joint-venture interest in the Koper Lake project and 30% in the Big Daddy project.
Neither the Koper Lake nor Big Daddy projects have completed pre-feasibility or feasibility studies. The company plans to present to potential buyers, merger partners, or funding sources.
